While in operation the work surface of rolls is getting covered with a layer of rolled material particles, surface of rolls becomes notably harder resulting in roll pressure and roll force increase, quality degradation and can cause damage of the roll equipment.

In this regard rolls are regularly reground while the internal stress of the roll surface layer is relieved and the work surface of rolls acquires the required roughness. All kinds of repair able surface defects are removed. Rolls are always ground in pairs; the rolls making up a pair have the same diameter and crown.

Pairs of work rolls are ground more frequently as they are in direct contact with the rolled strip. The more bulky back-up rolls are ground much less often, their grinding being several times more troublesome than work roll grinding.
Shear discs are processed in a similar way in order to remove edge splintering and other damages arising during their operation.
